What the Surveyor is
An unarmed ARC machine: a large metal sphere sealed in armor plating, with no ranged attack of any kind. The wiki lists 257 health, Heavy armor plating, and Core as its only weakness. It is the largest of the rolling ARC, and the in-game database text says it charges hostiles hoping to crush them with weight and speed, with many layers of plating to peel away before the core.
Threat ratings differ between databases. ARDB and Beebom both rate it a low threat, and Arc Raiders Atlas lists Tier Low alongside Difficulty Medium. Heavily armored but rated a low threat is the honest summary. It is also listed as "Rollbot" in places, the same machine under a different name.
How you know one is on the map
Look up, not around. The Surveyor stops periodically and fires a blue laser beam into the sky with a telescopic tool, which the wiki reads as communicating with ARC in orbit. Fextralife says that beacon can be seen from almost anywhere on the map, so hunt from a vantage point rather than sweeping buildings. It cuts both ways: it advertises the fight to every other Raider on the map, and Fextralife rates that PvP threat, not the machine itself, as the real danger here.
Scanner lights are the second read, and they decide the whole fight. The wiki's ARC page gives the state machine: blue is passive patrol, yellow is alerted, red is target acquired. TheGamer applies it to this machine and is blunt about it, the core only ever becomes exposed while the lights are blue. More on ARC detection.
How it attacks
Mostly, it does not. Per the wiki it senses approaching Raiders easily, finishes what it is doing, and rolls away faster than a Raider can sprint. It prefers to escape and only rolls into an attacker when left with no other option. Sources flatly contradict each other on that ram: the wiki calls it moderate damage, while Game Rant says Surveyors deal no damage at all and calls them the only harmless enemy in the game. No number is published anywhere and nothing we found settles it, so we are not putting a figure or a severity on it. Plan around the machine escaping, not around the hit.
It also calls in the ARC Assessor. Embark's 1.26.0 notes reference "the ARC Surveyor beam that calls in the Assessor," and the mechanism is documented on the Close Scrutiny map condition, where Surveyors call Assessors after finishing locating valuable materials. Whether an ordinary transmission does the same is undocumented, and the Assessor only arrived in 1.22.0.
Where to shoot it
The core. The clean window is while it is transmitting: the plating retracts and exposes the core while the machine sits still, and TheGamer widens the target to the antenna it extends for the beam. Both close the moment it detects you.
There is a second route to the same place. As the Surveyor takes damage its armored panels break off, the in-game database text describes peeling away many layers of plating before reaching the core, and Arc Raiders Atlas lists the core as exposed once the armor is broken as well as during the beam. So with no clean core window, strip the shell. Every panel that comes off is both loot and progress.
To force the window open, stun it. A Hornet Driver or a Showstopper stops it escaping or protecting its core, leaving it open to explosives such as Heavy Fuze Grenades. Game Rant puts that stun at roughly ten seconds.
What to bring
Ammo class, not damage number, decides whether you can hurt it. Rounds below Moderate ARC Armor Penetration bounce off Armored Plating outright.
- Light (Kettle, Stitcher, Bobcat, Hairpin, Burletta): Very Weak. Bounces.
- Shotgun (Il Toro, Vulcano): Weak. Also bounces.
- Medium (Rattler, Arpeggio, Canto, Renegade, Venator, Torrente, Osprey, Tempest): Moderate. The minimum that works.
- Heavy (Ferro, Anvil, Bettina): Strong. The wiki's own pick, named as best at shedding plating.
- Launcher (Rascal, Hullcracker): Very Strong.
- Energy (Jupiter and Equalizer at Very Strong, Aphelion and Dolabra at Strong): works.
Guides converge on a Renegade or Venator for penetration without burning your stock, with the Arpeggio, Anvil and Bettina also named, and a Ferro for core shots. Explosives are fastest on an exposed core: Heavy Fuze Grenades, Snap Blast Grenades and a Deadline mine are all named. No reliable time to kill is published, and the clip counts circulating trace to one writer in November 2025. Stats per gun: item database.
Where it spawns
Three independent databases agree on four maps: Dam Battlegrounds, The Spaceport, Buried City, The Blue Gate. Game Rant frames the spawn chance as low and says you can find them on any map, so treat those four as the confirmed list rather than an exclusive one. None of the lists mentions the newer maps and all may predate them, so those are unconfirmed rather than ruled out (map guides).
TheGamer reports the best luck on Spaceport and The Blue Gate, usually around the Village in Blue Gate's northwestern corner. The Blue Gate unlocks after 18 completed rounds, so it is not open on a fresh account.
The one guarantee is Close Scrutiny, a map condition that spawns Surveyors protected by Vaporizers, which then call in ARC Assessors. Its modifiers: no active locked doors, decreased loot value, increased ARC loot, and no free loadout, so bring your own kit (loadouts). The Mixed Signals quest from Shani does not require a specific map.
The mistake, and it is always the same one
Chasing it. It outruns your sprint, and the chase keeps its lights yellow or red, which is exactly the state in which the core stays sealed. You spend the raid holding the only weak point shut.
Ambush instead. Spot the beam, close while the lights are still blue, get in range with a stun or an explosive ready, and open on the core rather than the shell. If you spook one, break line of sight and let it settle: it resumes transmitting once it senses the danger has passed. The wiki also records Surveyors rolling off ledges while fleeing, and Embark has shipped four separate Surveyor physics and patrol fixes, so treat older out of bounds warnings as historical.
Is it worth fighting
Yes. It is one of the better value targets in the game.
- The Surveyor Vault, its unique salvage, upgrades the Medical Lab. Quantity is disputed: the ARDB drop table lists one per kill, TheGamer reports 3 to 5 after looting every panel the dead Surveyor sheds.
- XP is 200 for the destroy, 300 for scavenging the core, 100 per shell part.
- Drop table: ARC Powercell and Advanced ARC Powercell, ARC Alloy, ARC Circuitry, ARC Coolant, ARC Motion Core, ARC Performance Steel, Mechanical Components, Sensors, Surveyor Vault (keep or sell).
- Safe Pocket the vaults so a bad extract does not cost the run. It is safe to solo.
Cost: a real chunk of your ammo, plus a Vaporizer escort under Close Scrutiny.
When to just leave it
- Only Light or Shotgun ammo in the bag. You cannot get through the plating, and the fight only advertises your position.
- No stun, no explosives, and it has already seen you. It leaves, and you spend the raid following it.
- It has a Vaporizer escort and you are low on kit.
- You need the vault but cannot find one. The ARC Courier drops Surveyor Vaults too, so the Medical Lab is not hard blocked on this fight (more guides).
This is a fan-made companion site, not affiliated with Embark Studios. Everything above comes from the community wiki, in-game database text, official patch notes and published guides, with disagreements flagged.
Frequently asked questions
- How do you kill a Surveyor in Arc Raiders?
- Do not chase it, ambush it. The armored shell only retracts and exposes the core while the Surveyor is transmitting its blue beam, and it rolls away faster than you can sprint once it spots you. Stun it with a Hornet Driver or a Showstopper so it cannot flee or reseal, then hit the exposed core with explosives such as Heavy Fuze Grenades or with Heavy ammo. If you cannot get a core window, keep breaking armored panels off the shell, since each one is both loot and progress toward the core.
- What is the Surveyor's weak point in Arc Raiders?
- The core, and it is the only listed weakness. It is exposed only while the Surveyor is stationary and firing its blue beam into the sky with the armor plating retracted, and TheGamer counts the extended antenna as a weak point too. The wiki is explicit that the core is exposed only when the machine's lights are blue, so anything that alerts it seals the target. Attack it and it aborts the transmission and rolls away at once.
- What ammo do you need for a Surveyor in Arc Raiders?
- Medium at minimum, Heavy for real progress. Anything below Moderate ARC Armor Penetration bounces off Armored Plating, which rules out every Light weapon (Kettle, Stitcher, Bobcat, Hairpin, Burletta) and both shotguns (Il Toro, Vulcano). The wiki specifically names Heavy ammo as more effective at shedding the Surveyor's plating than other ammo types, and Launcher and Energy weapons sit at the same tier or above. Explosives landed on the exposed core are the fastest kill of all.
- Where do Surveyors spawn in Arc Raiders?
- Three independent databases list four maps: Dam Battlegrounds, The Spaceport, Buried City and The Blue Gate. Those lists do not mention the newer maps and may predate them, so the newer maps are unconfirmed rather than ruled out. Spawn chance is low and not tied to a specific map, so the practical method is to get high, scan the skyline and look for the blue beam. The Close Scrutiny map condition is the one reliable route, since it spawns Surveyors on purpose, escorted by Vaporizers.
- Is the Surveyor worth killing in Arc Raiders?
- Yes, it is one of the better value targets and no source argues for skipping it. It drops the Surveyor Vault, the unique item used to upgrade the Medical Lab, alongside a broad ARC materials table, and it grants 200 XP for the destroy, 300 for scavenging the core and 100 per shell part. Vault quantity is disputed, with one database table listing one per kill and TheGamer reporting 3 to 5 once you loot every shed panel. It is safe to solo, but the beam broadcasts the fight to every other Raider on the map.
- Why does the Surveyor run away instead of fighting?
- It is unarmed. The Surveyor has no ranged attack at all, so fleeing is its actual defence, and it senses approaching Raiders easily and rolls off faster than a Raider can sprint. It only rams when cornered with no other option, and sources disagree on whether that ram hurts, with the wiki calling it moderate damage and Game Rant saying it deals none. Once it senses the danger has passed it stops and resumes transmitting, which is your window.
