Arc Raiders Shredder Guide: Weak Point, Ammo, and Spawns
How to kill the Shredder in Arc Raiders: the thruster weak point, why heavy ammo and grenades are the only agreed answer, where it spawns, and when to walk away.

What the Shredder is
The Shredder arrived with the North Line update, patch 1.2.0, on November 13, 2025. Embark announced it a day earlier with one line: it "will first appear in Stella Montis, challenging Raiders to stay sharp in close-quarter encounters."
It is a heavily armored machine that hovers a short distance off the ground. It cannot fly: it needs ground paths to reach elevated positions, and it often gets stuck when you are above it.
Embark tunes it like a vehicle: 1.3.0 adjusted its turn speed, braking and suspension, 1.7.0 raised its speed and turning response, and two patches have tried to stop it snagging on corners. Its odd moments are physics, not machine learning. Embark told 80.lv that its reinforcement learning is for legged robots, while drones use traditional control systems.
How you know one is there
It is not reported to carry the motion sensors other ARC use. Fextralife says it appears to rely on sound and vision, so stealth holds up until it commits. It patrols slowly, becomes significantly faster once it detects you, and favors fights where cover and corners limit your escape.
Before it fires, it tells you: a bright orange glow and a distinctive metallic noise, which Beebom describes as the machine starting to scream. That glow is the cue to already be behind cover.
The attack
One ranged attack, repeated: a 360 degree shrapnel burst, described variously as a rotating shotgun blast, a salvo of four blasts in a circle, and a shrapnel sphere, with arcraiders.wiki adding a larger charged version of the same thing. Every version agrees on what matters. It fires in all directions at once, so strafing does not save you. It destroys everything not behind cover, and it pierces shields.
It lands after a short delay, then needs several seconds to recharge. That gap is the entire fight.
Range sits between the Hornet's and the Wasp's, and the burst loses accuracy the farther out you are. Up close, two direct hits can down a Raider. No official damage values exist, so treat it as lethal up close rather than as a number. Downed, it keeps a reduced-range attack, so do not walk up to a grounded one.
Where to shoot it
The weak point is its thrusters, pretty much the only part of the frame that is not heavily armored.
- The underside turbine. The hover unit on the bottom of the body. Primary target.
- The side maneuvering thrusters. Named as the second vulnerable zone.
- The orange core sometimes visible between armor plates also works.
- The glowing eye bar is a decoy. Do not shoot it.
Hit a thruster and it destabilizes: it sags, falls sideways or crashes outright, and stays vulnerable to grenades and fire on the ground. A well timed hit can stun it out of a burst, and ARC Armor Penetration weapons apply knockback that buys you room to reset.
The rhythm is fixed: cover, let the burst finish, step out during the recharge, rounds into the underside, back behind cover before the glow returns.
What to bring
ARC Armor Penetration decides this fight, not raw damage. Armored plating renders as shiny dark gray and needs Moderate ARC Armor Penetration or above; lower rounds bounce off. Weak points render bright yellow.
- Heavy ammo. The Ferro and the Anvil are the two weapons the guides name most often, and Beebom notes even level 1 versions are enough. The Bettina is the third Heavy ammo weapon.
- Light ammo does not work. It will not make a dent in the plating.
- Medium ammo is disputed. Game Rant calls it ineffective, ARC Raiders Atlas recommends it, so bring heavy.
- Shotguns work in close quarters, though Beebom notes a recent nerf without naming the patch.
Explosives are the efficiency play, though the guides name different grenades: two Trigger Nades (The Gamer), two Snap Blasts (Screen Rant), one Wolfpack (Game Rant), or the Heavy Fuze (Beebom and Atlas). Shredders do not dodge thrown grenades, so drop one onto it or into its path, ideally during or just after its charge animation. A Jolt Mine creates a stun window. Indoors they are dangerous to you too.
The loadout planner builds a heavy ammo kit, and the item database covers the parts.
Where it spawns
At launch it was Stella Montis only. Patch 1.22.0 (Flashpoint) changed that: "Shredders are now added to all maps (only during certain map conditions on Dam Battlegrounds)." Embark never defined those conditions. Guides still saying Stella Montis exclusively predate Flashpoint.
Every named spawn point on record predates that change, all in Stella Montis: Business Center, the hallways above Sandbox, Assembly and Assembly Workshop, Cargo Docks A and B, the Lobby Metro platform, and Culture Archives. No equivalent list exists for the other maps. Wherever it turns up, it favors indoors.
The mistake almost everyone makes
Fighting it in the open at close range. Every guide leads with this: no cover nearby, close range, no shields.
The burst has no blind side and shields do not stop it. Cover does. Screen Rant's fix is to break line of sight outright: a doorway, a wall, a pillar, or a high crate. Because it cannot fly and gets stuck when you are above it, height is worth taking.
Two runners-up: bringing light or medium ammo, and fighting one while another threat is live, since the fight is loud and pulls ARC and other Raiders.
Is it worth killing
Sources disagree. Game Rant calls its worth questionable, since it eats substantial ammunition for a Gyro and some recyclables, and says many players skip it outside trials. Screen Rant prefers avoidance, especially solo, while conceding a coordinated team makes it no more imposing than a Wasp or Hornet. The Gamer says it is manageable and worth the resources.
The drop is a Shredder Gyro (Uncommon) plus ARC Alloy, ARC Powercell, Mechanical Components, Simple Gun Parts, ARC Synthetic Resin, Thermo Lining and Shotgun Ammo. The kill awards 200 XP, scavenging the core awards 250. The Gamer says the Gyro has no function beyond being recycled or sold, so it is recycler value, not an unlock. Check it in Keep or Sell before deciding the ammo was worth it.
Our read: skip it solo or when low on heavy ammo. With a team, cover, heavy ammo and two grenades it is a fair fight, and the reasons to take one are XP, clearing a route, or a trial.
What is still unconfirmed
Embark publishes no health or damage figures, and the single wiki health number is uncorroborated and may be stale after 1.7.0. Nobody has confirmed whether a downed Shredder gets back up, whether the head is still destructible after 1.7.0 raised its head health, which parts are individually destructible, or what "certain map conditions" means on Dam Battlegrounds. One site claims it has a melee attack; every other source describes a single ranged burst, so it is left out.
More machines are covered in the guides index, and the ARC systems hub explains how they decide to come after you. This is a fan-made companion site, not affiliated with Embark Studios.
Frequently asked questions
- What is the Shredder's weak point in Arc Raiders?
- The Shredder's weak point is its thrusters, which are pretty much the only part of its frame that is not heavily armored. The main target is the underside turbine that holds it up, with the side maneuvering thrusters as a secondary option and an orange core sometimes visible between the armor plates. Hitting a thruster destabilizes it, makes it fall sideways or crash, and a well timed shot can stun it out of an attack. The glowing eye bar is a decoy and is not worth shooting.
- What weapon kills a Shredder fastest in Arc Raiders?
- Heavy ammo is the answer every source agrees on, with the Ferro and the Anvil named most often and even level 1 versions reported as enough. Light ammo will not make a dent in the armor plating, and sources conflict on whether medium ammo does anything, so heavy is the safe pick. Explosives are faster than bullets: guides variously report two Trigger Nades, two Snap Blast Grenades, or a single Wolfpack Grenade finishing one. Shredders do not dodge thrown grenades, so you can drop one directly onto it.
- Where do Shredders spawn in Arc Raiders?
- Shredders launched in Stella Montis only, but patch 1.22.0 (Flashpoint) added them to all maps, with Dam Battlegrounds gated behind unspecified map conditions. Many guides still say Stella Montis exclusively because they predate that patch. The only named spawn points on record are Stella Montis ones from before the change: Business Center, the hallways above Sandbox, Assembly and Assembly Workshop, Cargo Docks A and B, the Lobby Metro platform, and Culture Archives. Wherever it appears, it favors indoor areas.
- How do you dodge the Shredder's attack in Arc Raiders?
- You do not dodge it, you break line of sight. The Shredder fires a 360 degree shrapnel burst that hits every direction at once and pierces shields, so strafing and shielding both fail and only hard cover works. It telegraphs with a bright orange glow and a distinctive metallic noise before firing, which is your cue to already be behind a wall, doorway or pillar. It then needs several seconds to recharge, and that gap is when you shoot its thrusters.
- Is the Shredder worth killing in Arc Raiders?
- Guides genuinely disagree. It drops a Shredder Gyro plus ARC Alloy and other recyclables and awards 200 XP for the kill and 250 for scavenging the core, but it consumes a lot of ammunition, and the Gyro currently has no reported use beyond being recycled or sold. Solo or low on heavy ammo, skipping it is the better call. With a team, hard cover, heavy ammo and a couple of grenades it is a fair fight, and the real reasons to take one are XP, clearing a route, or a trial that requires it.
- Can a Shredder fly or follow you onto high ground in Arc Raiders?
- No. The Shredder hovers a short distance off the ground but it cannot fly, so it needs ground paths to reach elevated positions and frequently gets stuck when you are above it. Embark has patched its navigation more than once to reduce it snagging on corners, narrow spaces and short obstacles. Elevation is one of the strongest positions you can take against one, though patch 1.22.0 still lists a known issue where Shredders float to the ceiling in some rooms of the Hidden Bunker.
