What the Bastion is
The in-game Codex: "Covered in thick plating, the Bastion is a fortress on legs." ARC deploys it where it "detects potential resource deposits worth defending at all costs", so a Bastion standing in a field is a signal that the area is worth looting.
Wiki stats: 2,050 health, Heavy armor, a projectile volley as its primary attack, no special abilities listed. It is a multi-legged walker. The sources do not agree on a leg count: one wiki describes three pairs of articulated legs, the other never counts them, and nothing confirms the commonly repeated "four legs", so treat any leg number as unverified.
It patrols open outdoor areas on Dam Battlegrounds, Buried City, Spaceport, The Blue Gate and Stella Montis. Two named farm spots: the Outer Gates next to Checkpoint on The Blue Gate, and under the dome at Headhouse. Whether it spawns on Riven Tides is unknown, every Bastion source predates that map or ignores it. Map layouts on /maps.
How you know one is there
It only engages with line of sight. A wall, a building, or heavy foliage does not interrupt the fight, it ends it.
The tell is audio, a loud screech before every burst, and that cycle is the most useful thing to know about this machine.
The attack cycle
- A loud screech, then three seconds of gatling fire at the position it last saw you.
- A pause of a few seconds between bursts, your window to reposition or to shoot.
- The rounds land where you were, not where you are, so move laterally the moment you hear the screech. Standing still in the spot it last saw you is the worst option available.
- Front and side plating is effectively immune. Thick front plating makes frontal attacks almost useless.
Where to shoot it, in order
Three weak points, in a chain. All are the bright yellow matte material the game uses to mark parts that bypass armor and deal direct damage.
- Yellow kneecaps on the leg joints. Present on all leg joints. A hit deals critical damage and stuns or cripples the machine.
- Yellow canister on the rear. Destroying it deals critical damage, briefly stuns, and peels back the rear plate.
- The barrel-shaped core under that rear plate. A large barrel-like part that deals major damage when shot. This is the actual kill window.
The intended sequence is to shoot a leg joint until the Bastion is disabled, then get around behind it and hit the rear canister.
Breaking a leg downs it for roughly 11 seconds, then it stands back up. Breaking a second leg while it is already down does not reset that timer, so hold it until it recovers. This comes from player testing on the Steam forums, not a patch note.
A fourth weak point, the minigun barrel while overheated, is claimed by one site and appears on neither wiki. Unconfirmed.
What to bring
Ammo type decides this fight more than raw damage does. ARC surfaces come in three materials: unarmored matte white, armored dark gray that needs Moderate ARC Armor Penetration or better, and yellow matte weak points that ignore armor entirely. Heavy Ammo penetrates better than Medium or Light, and Launcher Ammo better than Heavy.
- Hullcracker, the pump-action grenade launcher. ARC Armor Penetration Very Strong, 100 damage, 5 round magazine, explosive projectiles that only detonate on ARC. It takes Launcher Ammo, not Heavy Ammo, whatever two popular guides say. Bring at least two stacks for a solo kill.
- Deadline mine, 1,000 damage on a 6 second timer, with a blast wide enough to hit several ARC parts at once, which usually destroys a larger machine outright. Next to the rear canister, sources describe it as an instant Bastion kill.
- Blaze Grenades are the named grenade counter, with Snap Blast Grenades slightly weaker.
- Heavy Ammo guns are the Ferro, Anvil and Bettina. The Torrente, a Medium Ammo LMG, gets recommended for sustained weak point fire, since weak points bypass armor anyway.
Build the kit on /loadouts, check parts on /items.
The mistake that wastes the whole fight
Shooting the armored body instead of the yellow weak points. Every independent guide names it first, in nearly the same words: avoid the armored body entirely, it burns ammunition for minimal effect, and the front takes near zero damage per shot.
Runner up, and this one gets people killed: assuming a legless Bastion is neutralized. Players report that its legs are only for movement, and that the upper body sits on a gimbal that swivels like a tank turret without them, so behind a downed Bastion is a better angle, not permanent safety. Traverse speed is disputed and no official figure exists, and it stands back up after roughly 11 seconds anyway.
When to fight and when to walk
Fight it when you came for Bastion Cells, brought Launcher Ammo or a Deadline, and have hard cover with more than one exit. Most guides call it manageable solo with the right weapon and positioning.
Walk away when you are mid run, low on ammo, caught in the open, or on a full loot extraction. No source publishes a verified time to kill, and the one guide that estimates it puts the fight at 30+ seconds of sustained fire and multiple reloads. Either way it drains ammo, shields and meds, and the noise draws every Raider who heard it.
The reason to fight anyway is the Bastion Cell. Killing Bastions is the only way to get one, and they gate Gear Bench and Gear Station upgrades including Mark 3 shields. Sources disagree on how many drop per kill, so plan for "multiple" rather than a number. Other drops per the wiki run from ARC Alloy, ARC Powercell and ARC Motion Core to ARC Performance Steel, Medium Gun Parts and Medium Ammo, with 500 XP for the destroy and 250 each for core, shell and leg salvage. Sort the haul on /keep-or-sell.
Patch history
- 1.2.0, November 13, 2025. XP per damage cut from 3 to 2, ARC part loot XP from 500 to 250. The Bastion was not added post launch, it was already being balanced here.
- 1.17.0 Shrouded Sky, February 24, 2026. Recycle and salvage values for ARC components including Bastion Cells cut in half. This was not in the official notes, players found it.
- 1.26.0 Riven Tides, April 28, 2026. Fixed a bug where the Bastion could be too accurate when switching targets mid-fire, and fixed aim assist not targeting leg joints and weak spots on Bastion, Bombardier, Queen and Matriarch.
What nobody has confirmed
Leg count. Turret traverse speed. Exact weak point multipliers, per part health, or true time to kill by weapon. How many Bastion Cells a kill drops. The overheated minigun barrel. Whether it spawns on Riven Tides.
Embark has confirmed machine learned locomotion for ARC generally, strictly how a robot places its feet and moves, and named only the leaper as an example. Nothing ties the Bastion's behavior to it, so read the 11 second recovery as a game mechanic. More on ARC behavior at /ai.
There is no first party Embark bestiary entry either: everything above traces to community wikis or the Codex text they quote, and the only official Bastion writing is in patch notes.
This is a fan-made companion site, not affiliated with Embark Studios. More machine breakdowns at /guides.
Frequently asked questions
- What is the Bastion's weak point in Arc Raiders?
- The Bastion has three, and they work as a chain. The yellow kneecaps on its leg joints deal critical damage and stun or cripple it, the yellow canister on its rear deals critical damage and peels back the rear plate, and the barrel shaped core underneath that plate is the real kill window. All three are the bright yellow matte material that bypasses ARC armor, unlike the front and side plating, which absorbs almost everything you put into it.
- What is the best weapon to kill a Bastion in Arc Raiders?
- The Hullcracker, a pump-action grenade launcher rated Very Strong for ARC Armor Penetration at 100 damage with a 5 round magazine, firing explosive projectiles that only detonate on ARC. It takes Launcher Ammo rather than Heavy Ammo, which several guides get wrong, and you want at least two stacks for a solo kill. A Deadline mine placed next to the rear canister is the faster option, since its blast damages multiple ARC parts at once and usually destroys a large machine outright.
- How long is a Bastion down after you break a leg?
- Roughly 11 seconds, then it gets back up. Breaking a second leg while it is already downed does not reset that timer, so the better play is to save the second leg break until after it recovers. This figure comes from player testing on the Steam forums rather than from an official patch note, so treat it as a working estimate rather than a published number.
- Where does the Bastion spawn in Arc Raiders?
- In open outdoor areas on Dam Battlegrounds, Buried City, Spaceport, The Blue Gate and Stella Montis, patrolling zones that contain valuable loot, since ARC deploys it to guard resource deposits. Two commonly named farm spots are the Outer Gates next to Checkpoint on The Blue Gate, and under the dome at Headhouse. Whether it also spawns on Riven Tides is unknown, because every Bastion source predates that map or ignores it.
- Is killing a Bastion worth it in Arc Raiders?
- Only when you specifically want Bastion Cells, which drop from Bastions and nothing else and gate Gear Bench and Gear Station upgrades including Mark 3 shields. The fight costs 30+ seconds of sustained fire and multiple reloads, drains ammo, shields and meds, and the noise draws every Raider who heard it. Skip it when you are mid run, low on ammo, in the open, or carrying a full load to extraction.
- How many legs does a Bastion have in Arc Raiders?
- No reliable source states a number. The community wiki only calls it a fortress on legs and notes yellow kneecaps on all of its leg joints, without ever counting them, and the one source that does give a figure says three pairs of articulated legs, which contradicts the commonly repeated claim of four. Another site references four joints per leg, which is a joint count rather than a leg count and is probably where the confusion started. Treat any leg number you see as unverified.
