What it is

The largest ARC machine in the game, on the map only while its own map condition runs. Embark's launch post calls it an imposing ARC machine that makes the Queen look friendly. It is a multi-legged walker, compared by The Gamer and Screen Rant to a giant beetle. MetaForge's database entry sums the kit up: it shoots rockets and gas, carries a big shield, and spawns its own Leapers, Bastions, Fireballs, Hornets and Wasps. Added in patch 1.2.0 on November 13, 2025.

How you know it is there

Shani calls it on drop-in: "A Matriarch has been sighted nearby. Her children seem hell-bent on keeping her from harm." The map picker flags it with a diamond link icon before you queue.

Three maps, per Embark's live schedule, the wiki and Dexerto: The Blue Gate, Dam Battlegrounds and Spaceport. Riven Tides is on nobody's list, but absence is not proof, so call it unconfirmed. It rotated hourly on the day we checked, with no fixed pattern published. Positions vary by outlet, and Cold Snap moved the Dam spawn, so old Dam coordinates are stale. Full callouts: maps.

How it attacks

The legs hurt on their own, and one that clips you knocks you over. Embark treats that walk as a physics problem, patching foot placement, terrain handling and stomp knockback for the Queen and Matriarch by name in updates 1.29.0, 1.33.0 and 1.36.0. More in our ARC AI breakdown.

Where to shoot it

Armor reads by color. Matte white is unarmored, shiny dark grey is armored and bounces anything below Moderate ARC Armor Penetration, matte bright yellow is a weak point. The Matriarch carries Heavy armor per the wiki infobox, and Dexerto rates its threat level Extreme.

The core is the answer, the legs are the decoy. The wiki: do not target the legs, break the faceplates off, then hit the big red glowing core.

Aim assist has targeted its leg joints and weak spots since patch 1.26.0. Screen Rant names different points entirely, the vertical eye and the low front vents, so put rounds into the matte yellow weak points and the exposed red core, and read your damage numbers rather than trusting any one outlet's map of its anatomy.

What to bring

Ammo type decides penetration. The wiki ladder runs Light, Shotgun, Medium, Heavy, then Launcher, with Energy Clip varying by gun but never worse than Heavy. There is one published threshold, the armored plating one above: below Moderate ARC Armor Penetration and your rounds bounce. What is not published is a per-gun penetration table, so past that threshold the ladder is a ranking and nothing finer. The kit is two guns: launcher to strip, heavy or energy to finish.

Full kits are on the loadouts page.

The one mistake everyone makes

Fighting it on flat, open ground. Every source lands here independently.

The summons are why: the wiki says they make an open fight almost impossible, so engage from behind large, solid cover. The missiles home and ignore a dodge roll, so the reflex that saves you from every other ARC does nothing here. Height works for a mechanical reason: rockets struggle to crest high ledges and often explode in front of you, and Fireballs and Leapers cannot follow you up.

Positions that work: Spaceport Control Tower A6 and the Launch Towers, the Electrical Substation at Dam Battlegrounds, the top of Blue Gate's Reinforced Reception with deployable barricades, and the Dam's Pipeline Tower roof.

Close second: shooting the shield. Hold fire until it falls. It is a free heal-and-reload window most players burn ammo into.

Is it worth fighting

Against: Screen Rant treats it as a roaming map hazard with no loot beyond its own drop. The Gamer calls it nearly impossible alone and puts a clean run at 15 to 20 minutes, on a raid clock, with the ARC Orbiter arriving at zero. GamesRadar sets the practical bar at four players, says anything under six takes a lot of time, and reckons that the sheer number of people needed means there are rarely enough Reactors to go around.

For: the Matriarch Reactor is the only material unique to it, a legendary that recycles into a Power Rod plus a Magnetic Accelerator and feeds the Aphelion legendary battle rifle. Sources disagree on its sell value, the wiki lists 11,000 coins and PC Gamer reported 13,000, so treat the exact figure as unsettled. The destroy pays 1,000 XP, the core another 1,000, each leg 500. One caveat on the Aphelion: Cold Snap officially moved the Aphelion blueprint drop from the Matriarch to Stella Montis, so the boss supplies the material but no longer the blueprint, whatever some fan databases still list.

The real threat is other Raiders, drawn by the event and happy to shoot whoever is fighting the boss, so bank Reactors in Safe Pockets immediately. Worth it as a planned group objective, not as a fight you walk into. See keep or sell.

Frequently asked questions

Where does the Matriarch spawn in Arc Raiders?
The Matriarch only appears while its own map condition is active, and that condition runs on exactly three maps: The Blue Gate, Dam Battlegrounds and Spaceport. Embark's live map-condition schedule, the community wiki and Dexerto all list the same three, and both Screen Rant and PC Gamer say smaller maps like Buried City and Stella Montis are too small to host it. Reported positions include The Breach and the Water Towers on Dam Battlegrounds, the Launch Towers on Spaceport, and the area between Ridgeline and the Warehouse Complex on Blue Gate. The Dam spawn was officially moved in the Cold Snap update, so older Dam coordinates are unreliable.
What is the Matriarch's weak point in Arc Raiders?
The community wiki's advice is to ignore the legs and shoot the faceplates until they break off, exposing a large red glowing core underneath. GamesRadar adds that the curved concave cap on top of the body breaks away more easily than most armor sections, making it a fast route in with a Snap Hook and a Deadline mine, and Game Rant recommends climbing the head to reach the exposed head core. Leg joints are listed as a secondary weak point on the wiki and Dexerto, though other outlets call them a poor target because the machine moves so much. Sources genuinely disagree on this machine's anatomy, so aim for whatever glows yellow or red and watch your damage numbers.
What weapons should you bring to fight a Matriarch?
The pattern most outlets agree on is two guns: launcher ammo to strip armor, then heavy or energy ammo for the exposed spots. The Hullcracker is the near-universal pick for stripping, with an Anvil or Bettina on heavy ammo, or a Jupiter or Equalizer on energy, for the follow-up. Bring Deadline mines for burst damage once you are on top of it, a Wolfpack for the summoned Bastions and Rocketeers, and a Venator or similar medium-ammo weapon for Wasps, Hornets and rival Raiders.
How much health does the Matriarch have?
There is no official health figure for the Matriarch. The community wiki lists a number, but its own citation flags that value as an estimate not based on a reliable source, and it lists the identical figure for the Queen, which makes it doubly suspect. At least one other outlet publishes a much higher number. Because no confirmed value exists, we do not print one.
Should you shoot the Matriarch's energy shield?
No. The shield absorbs every incoming projectile and throwable, including Wolfpack rockets, grenades and Jupiter shots, and only shots fired from inside the bubble actually land. The wiki's advice is to hold fire until it drops, which makes the shield window a free chance to heal, reload and reposition. The wiki says it lasts roughly a minute and may vary while GamesRadar says 30 seconds to a minute, and no official duration or cooldown has been published.
Is the Matriarch worth killing in Arc Raiders?
It is worth it as a planned group objective, not as a fight you wander into. The Matriarch Reactor is a legendary worth 13,000 Coins that recycles into a Power Rod and a Magnetic Accelerator and crafts the Aphelion legendary rifle, and the kill plus core plus legs pays out significant XP. Against that, guides put a clean run at 15 to 20 minutes on a raid clock, recommend four to six players, and note there are rarely enough Reactors to go around at that squad size. The bigger risk is other Raiders, who are drawn to the event, so bank Reactors in Safe Pockets the moment you loot them.
